Mechanism of action
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan that binds and retains water thanks to its hygroscopic characteristic. This ability allows it to lubricate and reduce collisions between cellular and tissue structures during movement, while also absorbing external mechanical shocks.
HA is an essential component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and exists naturally in various human tissues, including umbilical cord, serum, vitreous body, dermis, epidermis, thoracic lymph, urine, and synovial fluid (SF).
Synovial fluid fills the joint cavity, lubricates and protects the joint surfaces like a cushion, facilitating joint movement. Together with cartilage, it acts as a shock absorber for the joints of the body. Under optimal conditions, synovial fluid contains high concentrations of hyaluronic acid, an essential natural component.

For osteoarthritis therapy
Aging, obesity, specific professions are the main causes of degenerative, inflammatory and rheumatic pathologies: the HA in the synovial fluid thins and can eventually disappear, leading to a worsening of joint pain and stiffness, implying a degradation of the cartilage matrix.
Congenital diseases of the cartilaginous connective tissue, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) are widespread; chondropathies are, in fact, one of the most common arthropathies that affect/involve the cartilage, they can be post-traumatic, degenerative or inflammatory, resulting in more serious cases in a real decline in the quality of life as well as disability.
An intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid, referred to as Viscosupplementation, seeks to replenish the supply of the joint in critical conditions and can be combined in a multiple treatment protocol including muscle rehabilitation, systemic pharmacological therapies based on NSAIDs or analgesics and local pharmacological therapies such as cortisone injections.
